Join your colleagues for this 1 ½ day conference and learn more about the rapidly changing Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education policy landscape from influential federal policymakers and national education leaders before heading to Capitol Hill for meetings with your elected representatives.

Starting on Tuesday, July 12 at 12:30 pm, a panel with speakers from the federal agencies will discuss their top STEM initiatives and answer questions from participants. This will be followed by a panel with Congressional staff who will discuss current STEM related legislation, the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, and what's ahead in the 112th Congress. A panel of Washington insiders will discuss the political landscape and help participants prepare for Congressional visits the next day. The next day, July 13, participants will travel to Capitol Hill to meet with their members of Congress in the House and Senate (meetings must be scheduled prior to the event)

From the Inside Looking Out: Federal Education Initiatives that Target STEM Education Reform and Success

 

The Obama Administration has made STEM education a national priority. Invited speakers from the U.S. Department of  Education and the White House Domestic Policy Council will discuss their top STEM initiatives and answer questions from participants.

 Capitol Hill Staff Panel

Will they or won’t they?  Key Hill staffers will answer questions about efforts to reauthorize the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (No Child Left Behind) and how it will affect STEM education, discuss the current climate in Congress and what Congress thinks about STEM education, and examine what’s ahead for the recently reauthorized America Competes.

During this session, panelists will present a legislative update on current STEM legislation and distribute and discuss talking points to participants for their Congressional visits the next day.

 Meeting your Member of Congress

Following the panel discussion, participants from the same geographical location will be grouped and asked to have an interactive dialogue on what they heard during the day and how they can use that information for their Congressional visit. The groups will then do some role playing that will simulate an actual Congressional meeting. Participants will be asked to use what they have learned, including the talking points presented at the session, during the role playing to prepare for the scheduled meetings on July 13.

 

Networking Reception

 

Participants are invited to discuss the day’s events and gear up for Hill visits the next day during this network cocktail reception, sponsored by Hands-on Science Partnership.

At the beginning of the reception S. James Gates Jr. , a member of the Presidents's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology, will speak to attendees about the PCAST report Prepare and Inspire: K-12 Education in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) for America's Future, submitted to President Obama in September 2010.
